Ilza Nogueira

AGNALDO RIBEIRO (Jequié - BA, 01.12.1943) is Professor in the School of Music at the Federal University of Bahia since 1977. There he teaches composition, music theory, instrumentation and orchestration. He has been Coordinator of the “Composition and Conducting” graduate course (1987-88), Head of the Composition and Theory Department (1988-1992) and Vice-Director of the Music School (1992-1994).

He graduated in Drawing (School of Fine Arts, 1969) and Composition (School of Music, 1976) from the Federal University of Bahia.

His drawings and paints were presented in Brazilian group exhibitions in the decade of 1960, such as the I National Fine Arts Biennial (Salvador, 1966). As a composer, he has been performed in concerts and new music festivals in Brazil (Bahia, Rio de Janeiro, S. Paulo, Brasilia) and abroad (Greece, Germany, Argentina, Chile). In the 1970s, many of his works were prized in national and Latin-American competitions: Jorunská-Conká (Stimulus Prize, III Presentation Composers from Bahia, Salvador – 1969), Korpus-et-Antikorpus (1st. Prize and Prize of the Audience in the I National Competition of the UFBA New Music Ensemble, Salvador – 1975), Pseudokoncéptus (1st. Prize in the IX Presentation of Composers from Bahia, Salvador – 1975), Kantus (Ant)agônikus (3rd. Prize in the II National Competition of the UFBA New Music Ensemble, Salvador – 1976), Kalí-Dhoskópius (Prize of the Audience in the XII Presentation Composers from Bahia, Salvador), String Quartet n. 3 - Centaurus (Honor Mention in the I Latin-American Contemporary Music Festival - Agrupación Beethoven, Santiago / Chile – 1979) and Arkétipus (3rd. Prize in the National Composition Competition of the UFBA New Music Ensemble, Salvador – 1981).

Some of his works have been recorded in the LP series "Composers from Bahia" (UFBA): Korpus-et-Antikorpus (LP N. 3), Dois Antigos Quadros de Dimitris Trávulus (LP N. 5), In Kantus - O Centauro Encantado (LP N. 8) - and Sagitarius (LP N. 11). Other works are published in the homonymous sheet music series: Korpus-et-Antikorpus (vol. 2), Arkétipus (vol. 5), Momentus 2 (vol. 9), In Kantus - O Centauro Encantado (vol. 11) and Cíclicus (vol. 44).
